Women should be attractive. Women should be good wives. Women should not interrupt. Women should satisfy their husbands. Women should be punished for having an abortion. Women should not breastfeed in public. Sounds like a time when America was great? For who exactly?
misogyny loud and clear
Donald Trump, in his own words, has consistently and continually marginalized, objectified and demeaned women. Whether on the campaign trail, via sometimes bizarre tweets, in his books or during countless radio and TV interviews, Trump calls out women for being fat, for being stupid, for being “ugly”, for being aggressive, for being gold diggers - for just being women. In hindsight, he often feigns regret with a forced apology, but the next day, the next hour or the next utterance, his words prove otherwise. For a candidate who is hoping to become the next President of the United States, making America Great Again, despite the bold headlines meant to inspire blind patriotism, comes with the fine print of hatred, racism and misogyny.
a return to american bondage
Since the founding of this country, women have strived for equal rights - the right to own property, the right to vote, the right to quality healthcare, the right to equal pay, or the right to free our nipples. We've fought hard for equality on so many fronts, such as recognition of violence against women as a crime, eradication of workplace discrimination, and ending restrictive legislation around healthcare choices. Despite our progress, we still have more to accomplish in the years ahead. Donald Trump, should he become the leader of the most visible and influential country in the world, would represent an enormous step backward for women. The era of his American greatness - the 1940s and 1950s - is a period in our history of great inequality. Women, minorities and LGBT individuals suffered segregation and discrimination in all aspects of career, education and society. Trump's "Great America" is a return to the chains of injustices of the past. Trump's "Great America" is a return to the shackles of patriarchy. Trump's "Great America" is a return to the constraint of inequality.
don't trump women
I am incredibly passionate about a positive future of women. It is why I created the Femme Project. The 2016 Presidential race is not the first, nor the last, time that the rights of women will be at risk. What Donald Trump embodies is dangerous to all women, even those he claims to support. The Republican Party, despite being in disarray and unclear of what they believe at this point, is only serving to cement the sexist, racist and nationalistic views of a man whose complete self-involvement could destroy the future for generations to come. Not only will I vote my conscience in November, I will speak up and strive to prevent a return to American Bondage for women.
