charcoal series exploring the nature of sexual and social identity
★★★
the project
Engaging in social media can be a thrilling, addictive and humbling experience. The curated nature of social media presents a unique opportunity to explore the sexual implications of the social network. These interactions are simultaneously both momentary and permanent in ways that can be thrilling and destructive to women. “Sexting IMGS" explores the contrasts between body image and presentation as well as sexual empowerment and objectification.
The charcoal series presents the female body as a canvas for comment and feedback. The drawings, based on mobile phone photos, are aesthetic reflections on a woman's body as an object of desire from her point of view. The project juxtaposes a disposable art form, the digital “selfie,” and the female figure on canvas as high art.
